Directions for Completing the Financial Statement for International Applicants

All international applicants seeking an F-1 or F-3 student visa associated with Eastern Michigan University are required to certify that they have sufficient funds to cover all expenses while attending Eastern Michigan University. This form is NOT required for applicants who are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or living in the U.S. on another type of visa and plan to study under that visa. In those cases, submit a copy of your visa or documents showing the current immigration status. Refer to the Requirements Checklist of Information for International Students for instructions for other visa holders. No faxes or photocopies of this form or any supporting documents are accepted as official.

Check which visa type to apply for:

F-1 _____ Full time student visa type or F-3 ______Commuter student visa type(only Canadian citizen passport holders who will commute from within 75 miles of the Detroit- U.S./Canada border are eligible for this option; F-3 students can only study part time and require a new I20 every semester they are enrolled). Applicants may not study on a B1-2 or F2 visa and must apply for an F -1 or F-3 visa. J-1 visa applicants who are part of an EMU exchange program requesting a DS2019 should contact the international student adviser by mail (OIS Office, 244 Student Center, EMU, Ypsilanti, MI 48197), by phone (734.487.3116), or by E-mail (ois@http://www.wendangku.net/doc/7856c1fef61fb7360b4c6598.html) to find out what documentation is required to receive the DS2019. Other J1 visa holders submit a copy of your visa or documents showing the current immigration status.

Liquid funds are defined as money that is immediately accessible without any restrictions or penalties on the account for withdrawal for use in U.S. Dollars to pay a US institution. Please include an account summary of terms to verify that it is liquid.

Liquid funds include:

-Cash in an individual savings or checking bank account

-Individual Certificates of Deposits (CD’s)

- A U.S. based Money Market account that can be withdrawn immediately as cash in U.S. Dollars

Any joint accounts MUST include signatures from both or all parties who have access to that account.

The following are NOT acceptable as liquid funds for the purpose of this financial statement:

-Investment accounts and portfolios

-Stocks and Bonds

-Mutual funds and money market accounts outside of the U.S.

-Property and tax records

-Retirement funds

-401K or similar accounts

-IRA accounts

-Salary or employer letters

-Accountant’s letters

-Bank accounts listed in a company or business name

-Any speculative non liquid account

-Loan applications

-Ledgers

Costs listed above represent the average full time enrollment and do not include additional credits that are not mandatory per year to be listed on an I-20. must show proof of all living expenses. Students are responsible for all costs for the entire length of study in any EMU program.

Documents not issued in English must include an English translation, includ ing the account holder’s name

Supporting documentation must be dated within one calendar year of initial enrollment

Official, original documents must be provided. Faxed or photocopied documents are not acceptable

A copy of the applicant’s passport (name, birth date and citizenship information) must be included

The credit card you use will be billed accordingly. Do not pay for shipping until you have been notified that you are admitted AND eligible for an I20. The credit card information only stays on file for 30 days after you submit it, and the card will not be billed until the I20 has been shipped. The web site is secure, and no one outside of UPS will be able to view the credit card information. EMU has arranged to have a special discounted rate for I20 shipments. If you do not supply the shipping information within two weeks of the I20 being created, EMU will mail it to your permanent international address using the US Postal Service regular delivery.
