长久以来，中国一直梦想着打开国门，邀请世界各地的运动员来北京参加奥运会。

今晚，梦想变成了现实，祝贺北京！

你们选择“同一个世界，同一个梦想”作为本届奥运会的主题，今晚就是这个主题的体现。

我们处在同一个世界，所以我们像你们一样，为四川的地震灾难而深感悲恸。中国人民的伟大勇气和团结精神使我们备受感动。

我们拥有同一个梦想，所以希望本届奥运会带给你们快乐、希望和自豪。

各位运动员，我们的创始人皮埃尔·德·顾拜旦是因为你们而创立了现代奥林匹克运动会。奥运会属于你们。让奥运会成为运动员的盛会。

请大家牢记，奥运会不仅仅意味着比赛成绩。

奥运会还是和平的聚会。204个国家和地区奥委会相聚于此，跨越了民族、性别、宗教以及政治制度的界限。

The following is the speech given by International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics: Mr President of the People"s Republic of China,

Mr Liu Qi,

Members of the Organising Committee,

Dear Chinese Friends,

Dear Athletes,

For a long time, China has dreamed of opening its doors and inviting the world"s athletes to Beijing for the Olympic Games.

Tonight that dream comes true. Congratulations, Beijing!

You have chosen as the theme of these Games One World, One Dream. That is what we are tonight.

As one world, we grieved with you over the tragic earthquake in Sichuan Province. We were moved by the great courage and solidarity of the Chinese people.

As one dream, may these Olympic Games bring you joy, hope and pride.

Athletes, the Games were created for you by our founder, Pierre de Coubertin. These Games belong to you. Let them be the athletes" Games. Have Fun !

Remember that they are about much more than performance alone.

They are about the peaceful gathering of 204 National Olympic Committees-regardless of ethnic origin, gender, religions or political system.

Please compete in the sprit of Olympic values: excellence, friendship and respect.

Dear athletes, remember that you are role models for the Youth of the World. Reject doping and cheating.

Make us proud of your achievements and your conduct.

As we bring the Olympic dream to life, our warm thanks go to the Beijing Organising Committee for their tireless work. Our special thanks also go to the thousands of gracious volunteers, without whom none of this would be possible.

Beijing, you are a host to the present and a gateway to the future. Thank you!

今天，来自奥林匹亚的圣火，跨越五大洲、四大洋，将在这里熊熊燃起。在这激动人心的历史时刻，我谨代表第29届奥林匹克运动会组织委员会，向来自世界各国家、地区的运动员、教练员和来宾表示热烈的欢迎！向国际奥林匹克委员会、各国际单项体育组织，向参与奥运会筹办的建设者和工作者，向所有关心、支持北京奥运会的朋友们表示衷心的感谢！

举办奥运会是中华儿女的百年梦想。七年前，十三亿中国人民与奥运有了一个美好的约定。从那时起，在国际奥委会的指导帮助下，中国政府和人民满怀激情，以最大的努力实践绿色奥运、科技奥运、人文奥运理念，认真做好筹备工作，兑现向国际社会作出的郑重承诺，使奥林匹克精神在中华大地得到了更广泛的传播。

在我国四川发生特大地震灾害后，国际社会和国际奥委会的支持与援助使中国人民感到温暖，也使我们增强了重建美好家园、办好北京奥运会的信心。

奥林匹克运动的魅力在于她的巨大包容力。今天，全世界204个国家、地区，不同民族，不同宗教信仰的人们相聚在五环旗下，增进了解，加深友谊，共同奏响“同一个世界，同一个梦想”的乐章。

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

Ladies and gentlemen, friends:

Today, the sacred flame from Olympia, across five continents and four oceans, will ignite raging here. In this exciting historical moment, I, on behalf of the 29th Olympic Games Organizing Committee, to the world from countries and regions of the athletes, coaches and guests a warm welcome! To the International Olympic Committee, international individual sports organizations, to participate in the

Olympic Games organising the builders and workers, to all show concern and support for the Beijing Olympic Games friends to express my sincere thanks!

Sons and daughters of China hosting the Olympic Games is the dream of a century. Seven years ago, 1.3 billion Chinese people and the Olympics have a good agreement. Since then, the International Olympic Committee under the guidance of help, the Chinese government and people enthusiastically, with the greatest efforts to practice Green Olympics, Hi-tech Olympics and People"s Olympics concept, and do a good job preparatory work to the international community to fulfill the sol emn Commitment to the Olympic spirit in China has been more widely disseminated.

Sichuan Province in China occurred after the earthquake disaster, the international community and the International Olympic Committee"s support and assistance to the Chinese people feel warm and also to enhance the reconstruction of our beautiful home, good confidence in the Beijing Olympic Games.

The Olympic movement is the charm of her great tolerance. Today, the world"s 204 countries and regions, different nationalities, different religious beliefs of people gathered in the Fifth Ring"s, enhance understanding, deepen friendship, common played the "One World, One Dream" music.

Olympic spirit is the true meaning of the pursuit of people-centered, self-realization of the

self-improvement and beyond. Every athlete, will be in an environment of fair competition, displayed superb skills, participation display of passion, the desire to create brilliant minds.

The important mission of the Beijing Olympic Games is to promote cultural exchanges between the countries in the world. We sincerely hope that the Chinese nation has a long history and culture, full of vigor and vitality of urban and rural areas, the hospitality of the people and friends can leave a beautiful memory.

Tonight we are gathered together to celebrate the Games of the new millennium, the athletes" Games, a unique tradition that can trace its origins back over 2500 years to ancient Olympia.

Welcome to the athletes of the world!

Welcome to 28 International Sports Federations and 199 national Olympic Committees!

Our gratitude goes:

·to the people and government of Australia, New South Wales, Sydney and all other communities involved, for their friendly welcome and hospitality;

·to Sydney 2000 for the excellent preparation of the Games;

·to the Australian Olympic Committee for its dedication to Olympism;

·to the thousands of volunteers for their exceptional serv ices. You have made the Games possible. Thank you.

·to the mass media for their contribution to presenting the Games to the world; ·and to our partners and sponsors for their support and their belief in the Olympic ideal;

·to all of you, sport-loving spectators here and television viewers around the world.

Finally I would like to express our respect to all those who have made Australia what it is today -- a great country, with special tribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strat islander people.

The Olympic Games are unique and of universal character. They unify of all origins and creed. The contribution of sport to the understanding and unity of our society is extraordinary. Sport and the Olympic Movement are also an essential part of education, which is real wealth of any country. The entire Olympic Movement would like to pay tribute to Greece, birthplace of Olympism, where the tradition goes back over 25 centuries. We would also like to honour the memory of the Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games.
