1月7日11点08分，随着“和谐号”CRH1A型动车组列车，同时从广州南站、珠海北站和新会车站始发，广州至珠海城际铁路正式开通运营，标志着珠三角西岸的珠海、中山、江门市从此不再受没有铁路的制约，区域经济一体化发展从此融入全国大路网之中。
改革开放30多年来，珠三角西岸地区的经济发展因没有铁路而深受制约，珠海、中山、江门因“市无寸铁”而徘徊在全国大路网之外，阻碍了可持续发展的制造业、金融服务业和基础性产业在当地落户生根。有资深人士表示，广州至珠海城际铁路的通车，打破这一交通瓶颈，高端客流和大量的商机将从此蜂拥而至，为当地经济有好又快地可持续发展增添力量。
有信息显示，从今天起，旅客来往广州珠海、广州中山、广州江门间，旅行时间由此前乘汽车的150分钟、90分钟和110分钟，大幅缩减到41分钟、28分钟和53分钟。

The information show, from today, the travel time from the previous 150 minutes, 90 minutes and 110 minutes by car, reduce to 41 minutes, 28 minutes and 53 minutes by train between Guangzhou to Zhuhai, Guangzhou to Zhongshan and Guangzhou to Jiangmen.
